Goals and limitations
Rhinoplasty changes nasal shape or size and may also address injury or functional concerns. Facial balance, nasal structure and skin affect the result. Changes have limits, and another person’s result is not a guarantee. Discuss your goals clearly; surgery alone does not resolve social or emotional difficulties.
Open and closed approaches
A closed approach uses incisions inside the nostrils; an open approach also uses a small incision between them. Selection depends on the changes required and surgical plan. Ask why the recommended approach is suitable for your anatomy and goals rather than choosing from a technique name alone.
What to discuss at consultation
Describe both appearance goals and breathing concerns. Report medical conditions, allergies, previous operations, all medicines, vitamins, herbal supplements and tobacco or alcohol use. Assessment may include examination, measurements and photographs, followed by discussion of options, expected outcomes and risks.
Preparing for surgery
You may need tests or medication adjustments. Give the surgical team a complete medication list and ask about medicines or supplements affecting bleeding; do not stop prescribed treatment independently. Smoking cessation is part of preparation. Arrange transport and support for at least the first night, and obtain the facility’s fasting and arrival instructions.
Early recovery and aftercare
Splints, dressings or packing may support early healing. Obtain clear care, medication and follow-up instructions. Ask about dressing removal, return to activity and contacting the team. Follow your surgeon’s individual plan.
When the result becomes clearer
Initial swelling reduces over weeks, but refinement may take up to a year. Swelling can fluctuate and be greater in the morning. Early appearance is not the final result; discuss healing at follow-up.
Risks and unexpected symptoms
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, altered smell, damage to nasal structures or lasting breathing difficulty, alongside anaesthetic risks. Cosmetic results are not guaranteed. Contact the surgical service promptly for severe pain or unexpected symptoms. Before surgery, ask how individual risks and any complications would be managed.
Questions before deciding
Ask about experience, complications, achievable changes and follow-up. Allow time to decide. Advertising images and guaranteed-result claims do not replace a clear discussion of risks and care.
