Throat, larynx and voice assessment

Persistent voice changes, throat discomfort or swallowing problems deserve assessment. Prepare a symptom history and explain how daily life is affected.

Explain your symptoms

Describe hoarseness, throat discomfort, cough and duration. Laryngitis is one cause of a changed voice; not every voice problem has the same diagnosis.

Before the consultation

Note vocal demands at work, smoke exposure, medication and previous episodes. Ask whether laryngeal examination and further support are appropriate.

Looking after your voice

Avoid shouting and straining. Speaking comfortably is different from whispering, which can also strain the voice.

When not to wait

Breathing difficulty needs immediate medical attention. Persistent or recurring voice and swallowing problems also need medical assessment.

This is general information. Treatment decisions require an examination and individual assessment.
