Deviated septum and nasal obstruction

Nasal blockage has several possible causes. Assessment helps establish whether a deviated septum contributes and which options are appropriate.

Why assessment matters

The septum divides the nasal passages. A deviation may cause no symptoms or contribute to blockage. Other conditions can also affect nasal airflow.

Choosing treatment

Options depend on the cause and severity. Septoplasty addresses the septum; surgery is considered after symptoms and nonsurgical options are assessed.

Questions to bring

Is the septum causing my blockage? What is the goal? How does septoplasty differ from changing the outside of the nose? Ask about bleeding, infection and persistent symptoms.

This is general information. Treatment decisions require an examination and individual assessment.
